I think I must be the only progressive Christian who hasn’t read Blue Like Jazz.
I’ve tried more than once. But something about its opening kept getting on my nerves.
I once listened to an Indian on television say…
“An Indian”?
Every time I saw that line I got turned off.
Donald Miller’s words called to mind colonialism and tokenism and other things that I cannot stand. (If you don’t get what I mean, that’s fine.) The rest of the text on that page seemed to be written in a dry, hipster-ish tone that I couldn’t relate to. It was all a little too laid back for my liking.
I realized that this was a book that everyone was raving about. But I really couldn’t get into it.
Fast forward several years. They’ve turned BLJ into a movie.
I’ve loved Marshall Allman since he played Tommy on True Blood. Somehow, this trailer has piqued my curiosity.
One day I might just check it out..

…huh! I really loved this book when I first read it, but I don’t know if it’s stood the test of time. I’m curious about the movie! I hope it doesn’t just get marketed straight to churches, with church viewings and movie promotions at Sunday worship, etc. I hope they deposit it in the world of secular movies and see what non-Christians think.
