Type Books
I love going downtown. When I’m there, I feel rejuvenated. On Friday I hit Queen St. West, and in particular…Type Books.
It’s killing me that I didn’t take the most important photo of all–of their sign. But I did capture their current window.

The awesome Kalpna Patel (@GhostfaceKnitta) designs their displays. After over a year of following each other on Twitter, I’m glad to have finally met her.
Although this was my first visit to Type, it won’t be my last. In an era of big-box bookstores, Type offers a refreshing alternative.

Mistakes make magic.
Over time in this life I have stopped and started. I have struggled with the desire to show myself, versus hiding until conditions are perfect for the wonder that is me* to be revealed. However, even as those words flow from my brain through my fingers, I know that they are flawed. For, as shy as I may be…As fearful as I’ve been, I know that I must persist. If nothing else, I know this: Mistakes make magic. They bring us closer to who we are and where we need to be.
*That’s not arrogance talking. I believe that we are all amazing.

Sound Investments: JoJo
Since last night there’s a track that I’ve been listening to on repeat.
I found it while browsing my friend Mischa’s Twitter timeline. At first, I was conflicted.
“I don’t know…It’s a remake of an Anita Baker song…”
I have the original “Caught Up In the Rapture” in my iTunes collection. As far as I’m concerned, it’s perfect. A cover couldn’t do it justice.
“But…But it’s JoJo.” Unlike some so-called divas, I know that JoJo can actually sing. I hadn’t heard from her in ages. I made my way over to her Soundcloud page, and pressed play.
Oh. my. damn. At 3:38, I nearly died. JoJo’s voice has so much power and passion. I love it!

Watch It: 19-2
So, I’m in Canada, studying television so that I can become one of our nation’s finest industry pros. I also try to keep an eye on what my country is creating. Enter 19-2.

19-2 (nineteen-two) is an English iteration of the Québécois (French) series of the same name.
Thus far, I enjoy it. I like digging into the nitty-gritty aspects of police work. I like seeing the various dimensions of the characters’ lives unfold on screen. Last week during the show’s third episode, a huge twist was revealed. I didn’t expect it. I felt shocked and disappointed by what I discovered.
And most of all, I was impressed with 19-2’s writers for taking their viewers…There.
(Usually I don’t give a damn about spoilers. Consider yourself lucky.)
19-2 airs tonight at 9pm EST on bravo. Catch it if you can!

Let him cook: Jesse Eisenberg
So. Mr. Social Network has been cast as Lex Luthor, and folks aren’t having it.
Whether in real life or virtually, I know that some people have been disgusted. Meanwhile, me?
I’m gonna be here in the corner…
Here’s why:
1. The Social Network showed me that Jesse is insanely talented. As actors go, he strikes me as someone who has a solid range. I’m not willing to judge him based on something that hasn’t been released.
Also, just as I was wrapping up this post, I found an article on NPR’s site written by someone who agrees with me. As Linda Holmes said…
Lex Luthor, after all, is a smart, diabolical, ice-cold, inhuman, troubled, brilliant, conniving, hateful, maladjusted megalomaniac.
In playing Mr. Luthor, it’s not exactly as though Eisenberg will be visiting new territory.
2. Usually I’m not wrong about these things. Every now and then news of a film concept or casting decision comes my way. If I have the feeling that something’s gonna suck, it hits me pretty hard. And this Lex Luthor announcement? No WTFs in sight.
Just a big, fat ‘ol pile of WAIT. AND. SEE.

Ain’t a damn thing changed.
Sorta.
I’m halfway through TV school. Remember last year when I posted my intentions?
This term our instructors have started giving us exercises to get us focused on our future.
I don’t mind writing. However, my main area of interest remains–I want to be in a position of power. I need to ensure that people’s stories are told authentically. Especially women of colour. It’s one of my passions.
Hence, I’m still interested in producing. Yet a new interest has emerged. Development.
Never mind making a show. You know those people in charge of determining which shows make it to air? Those who shepherd a show from its inception until it hits your screen? I want to join them. I figure if I can prevent bad TV from happening to good people, I’ll be happy.
