  • Oh, Canada.

We’ve really been through it, haven’t we?

After nearly a decade, Stephen Harper is no longer our Prime Minister. We now have a Liberal government, run by none other than Justin Trudeau.

Among Mr. Trudeau’s campaign promises, there was a vow to construct a cabinet that consisted of an equal number of women and men.

That promise turned into reality Wednesday morning after he was sworn in. However the preceding days brought some interesting press coverage.

Here’s a taste of what I’m referring to:

God bless Scaachi Koul. Jonathathan Kay and Tasha Kheiriddin left me flummoxed. As I watched them, I found myself imagining the days when people believed the earth was flat and were afraid of falling off.

Meanwhile, I kept furrowing my brow and asking “Where…”

    Where does it come from?

    The fear, I mean.

Here’s the thing that people don’t seem to understand about diversity: Intentionally giving women or people of colour–or even BOTH–positions of power will not bring civilization to its knees.

However it’s clear that such initiatives bring terror to the heart of grown adults. And I think that’s a shame.

Nothing will be lost through the purposeful inclusion of women in Canada’s cabinet. We are not less than–mindless automatons, incapable of making good decisions. We are fully human, and deserve to be treated as such.

  • All that I can say…

Is that yesterday was wonderful. Full-to-bursting with wisdom and love.

    I mean…

I know I’ve used this photo before. But, alas, Darlings. It fits!

The Women’s Freedom Conference was extraordinary.

Sisterhood can be a truly beautiful, empowering experience. One that deserves to be treasured.

Thank you to the entire team behind this event. It was truly a day to remember!

  • Ode to the “F” word.

    Happy Sunday, everyone!

    1. Today marks the launch of the Women’s Freedom Conference. You can attend it online for free.

    2. Yesterday, this article showed up in my Twitter timeline.

    I sent out a response.

I reckon there may be a few people out there who didn’t hear the “f-word” until Beyoncé uttered it. However, most of us know–and can teach them–the truth.

Feminism existed long before Bey was born. It’ll remain long after she’s gone. And more importantly, her contributions have done nothing to hurt the movement.

  • Coming Soon: Women’s Freedom Conference

This weekend women from around the world will be celebrated at an event that many haven’t heard of.
    WFCbadgesupporters

The Women’s Freedom Conference will take place on October the 25th, in New York City. Its format and purpose are truly innovative. Although the audience is bound to include people from all walks of life, the Women’s Freedom Conference is a celebration of women of colour. It’s the first event of its kind available digitally. I also believe it’s the only one of its scope accepting remote attendees.

Their mission impressed me. As per the conference’s web site, their goal is

to center Women of Color–our success, our concerns, our work, our activism, and our existence as vital contributors to making the world a better place. We want to make sure that women of color from around the world have a space to speak out and be heard, to teach others and to learn from each other, and to inform people of the work that they are doing in their respective communities.

In addition to attending their free webcast, there’s space available for in-person attendees. Visit this page to purchase your tickets. (Their online content is free.) If you can contribute financially to this event, visit their crowdfunding page.

For further details, you can read the complete press release for the Women’s Freedom Conference on their web site.

I’ll be there–even if only from my laptop.

  • I approve this message.

If you’ve been with me for a while, you know that last year I wrote this post. Looking back, I think it’s obvious  that I didn’t deeply consider the impact of watching The Cosby Show. However, in light (or perhaps “in spite“) of  what we all know, I felt a strong push to say something.  I was determined not to let one man’s actions ruin the legacy of a show that was a treasured part of my childhood.

At the time I wrote that I’d still watch The Cosby Show because it’s what I believed. I felt that I could without any qualms whatsoever. However, now, after giving the issue more thought, I know that that’s not entirely correct.

Since childhood, I’ve known there was a difference between a performer and his or her character. To this day I get irritated when I find out about people giving actors a hard time over the folks that they portray. I’ve even heard people who don’t understand acting make comments about horrible characters, in the vein of,”Can you imagine the type of person you’d have to be in order to play that scum?”

Enter Cliff Huxtable. I can’t help but think about how much everyone loved him. And then the allegations* began. Surely, this is is one of those cases when an actor’s behaviour has coloured his character–and not at all for the better.

I still know that Bill Cosby wasn’t The Cosby Show’s only star. I enjoyed the writing. The entire cast was—and is—clearly, talented.

That’s why when I saw this, all I could do is sigh.

I’m thankful for Goldie Taylor, who wrote the cover story, and I applaud Ebony’s editors. The magazine’s cover is painfully accurate. The allegations* against Bill Cosby have indeed shattered an illusion. The vision of the beautiful family that he led, as illustrated through The Cosby Show, has been forever marred.

I may smile as I reminisce over certain episodes. Yet if I had the chance today to see a Cosby Show rerun, I believe that whenever Mr. Cosby appeared, a chorus of “How could you?”s would fill my mind. My heart would be heavy.

    As it should be.

*My use of the word “allegations” is not intended to insult Cosby’s victims. I use the term only as a technicality, since he hasn’t yet been charged with anything.

  • I see you.

    Yes.

    YOU.

    Intelligent.

    Talented as hell.

    Ready to RISE.

    Yet what are you doing?

    Standing still.

    WHY?

    You are afraid.

    Everyone is in the ring.

    EVERYONE is bolder than you.

And somehow smarter and better, and–

    But, wait!

    How do you know?

    When have YOU tried?

I mean, let’s tell the truth.

    You dare enough to dream,

    But not

    DO.

In fact, you feel that once you do DO,

    You are, somehow

    Doomed!

    You want an easy

    GRIT-FREE

    ride.

You don’t want to pay the cost—just

    be

    the

    Boss.

Well, I’m gonna tell you something.

The only way to succeed is to fail first.

    And yes.

    YES!

It’s been said a million times.

    The cliche–it BURNS!!

But it hurts because it’s the truth.

    Failure builds character.

    Failure gets your juices flowing.

    Failure gets your mind

    GROWING.

(And you know all those times when it seems like

    NOTHING’S

    GOING ON?

    That’s not failure. That’s called

    BUILDING

    YOUR

    FOUNDATION.)

There is a place where you belong,

But in order to get there,

You will need the lessons that come

    In your state of simplicity.

    From the roots of

    humility

    and hard work.

    From

    pride

in the sense that you know how to honour your gifts.

    And you will get there.

But not by asking about opportunities and not following up.*

Not by hesitating, when you have all the tools that you need for a fresh start.

    No.

    Begin - 2

*Been there. Done that. Why do you think I’m writing this?
